How Do I Remove the Scales in My Showerhead?
By Matias Wilson
Showerhead scales accumulate through time. If you are living in an area with hard water, the scales develop in
the holes of the showerhead and block the pouring of water. You may also experience the same problem if you are not
using your shower for a long time. To free yourself from this problem, you only need few tools and some patience.
Cincinnati plumbers recommend that you do the cleaning yourself to equip yourself with new knowledge and skills.
Here is how you will do it.
Before you start cleaning, it is useful to know that the scales are calcium and lime deposits. They precipitate
when you use water. If you ever notice the white scale in your kettle after boiling your water, these same deposits
clog your showerhead. Cincinnati plumbers advise the use of home remedies like soaking the showerhead in vinegar
overnight. The acidity of the vinegar dissolves the scales. The following morning, use a stick or brush to remove
the remaining residues. If the kitchen solution does not work, Cincinnati plumbers will tell you to use a
commercially prepared cleaning solution. However, be careful in handling the chemical since it can cause
irritation.
To start with, remove the showerhead from the wall, taking extra care not to cause scratches in it. Fill a
bucket with the calcium lime and rust remover. Carefully place the scaled showerhead and let it soak for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, get a nylon brush and gently brush off the loosened scales. Wear gloves during the procedure to
avoid direct skin contact with the chemical. Remove the old Teflon tape attached to the shower pipe and replace it
with a new layer. Two or three wraps are enough. Carefully attach the cleaned showerhead onto the threads and
tighten firmly using a wrench. If it will still not work, call the Cincinnati plumbers for assistance.
